Jeep Renegade 2017 review

The Jeep may not be the best all-rounder when you're looking for a practical car, but the Renegade has undeniable charm. Here's what we thought of the 2017 model of Jeep's compact SUV:

The exterior of the Jeep Renegade 2017

The Renegade features unmistakable 'Jeep' styling with round headlights, a vertical-duct grille, boxy body shape, and squared wheel arches. Designed for the style-conscious, there's plenty of choices for colour, trim, a panoramic or removable sunroof, a tent kit, bike carriers, and more personalisation.

Jeep's small SUV is tough underneath.

Importantly for those venturing off-road, the underbody is very well-protected - the Trailhawk option is higher than the rest of the range and comes with all-terrain tyres. The front and rear bumpers on the Trailhawk are also specially designed to improve approach and departure angles in terrain.

Inside the Jeep Renegade 2017

Safety in the Jeep Renegade 2017 is excellent with seven airbags, electronic stability control, and electronic traction control which helps to prevent wheelspin on slippery roads. A tyre pressure monitor gives you an early warning of a slow leak, so you can plan to get closer to a repair shop and minimise the distance driven by the space-saver spare.

The spare wheel is stored in the cargo area, which means that if you get a flat tyre, you have to remove the luggage to access the spare. There's room for a reasonable amount of luggage.

Driver comfort includes height and reaches adjustment for the steering wheel, and the parking brake is an electronic switch rather than a bulky lever. There are two ISOFIX attachments in the rear seats and enough room for two adults.

Connectivity

All models come with a 6.5-inch touchscreen 'Uconnect' audio system that has voice-control for audio as well as steering wheel controls, Bluetooth phone connection, AUX, USB and six-speakers. The screen also displays the rearview camera. Note that there's no CD player.

Jeep's Uconnect system provides emergency and roadside assistance, remote door-locking and stolen vehicle location services.

There's also 12V power outlets in the centre console and in the boot.

What's it like to drive a Jeep Renegade 2017?

The Jeep Renegade has a genuine off-road ability, as long as you purchase the range-topping Renegade Trailhawk. The catch is that towing capacity is less at just 907 kilograms.

Electric blue stands out anywhere.

For prospective owners who intend to stay in the city and suburbs, there's the Limited with extra features, the peppy 1.4-litre turbo engine and optional safety pack offers value for money. It's also got a reasonable towing capacity of 907 kilograms.

Steering is light and direct, and very comfortable for highway driving. The only downside is the wind-noise due to the square corners of the cabin, and bumps are smoothed over.

It comes with a five-year, 100,000-kilometre warranty.

Who's the Jeep Renegade 2017 for?

The Jeep Renegade is for the image-conscious young family or professional aiming to turn heads while enjoying the punchy turbo engine.

Be aware that unless you splash for the Trailhawk, you'll have to admit that your Jeep doesn't really go off-road - but how often do you go truly off-road anyway?
